In today’s society, about 50% of all families are headed by a single parent. The overwhelming majority of these parents are single moms. This puts an enormous pressure on these moms to provide for their children financially and emotionally. Many moms find themselves in the position of barely making ends meet. They see no future in their current employment and may feel trapped by their lack of education and training. If you are one of these women and would like to return to college then financial help may not be that far way. There are a number of college grants for single moms to apply for.

One of the first places you will want to look for college grants is to the Federal Government. The Federal Government will award close to 30 billion dollars to individuals who wish to complete a college degree. This money is awarded on a need basis. So, if you are a single mom who supports her family, chances are that you will qualify for a large college grant.

To begin with, you will need to complete and submit a FAFSA which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is the standard form that all persons seeking federal grants or loans for college must fill out. You can easily do this online or it is also available on paper; although submitting the application online will result in a much quicker determination of your eligibility.

There are several types of grants offered to qualified applicants. Probably the most familiar grant is the Pell Grant. Should you qualify for the entire amount, you will receive at least $5,550.00 per academic year. You also will receive more money should you chose to attend summer school.

Grants are also available for qualified applicants who are pursuing specific fields of study. If you are interested in the science, math, or computer field, then you may also apply for a SMART Grant. This grant has been developed for those who are entering their third or fourth year of study and will be earning degrees in one of those or related fields of study.

Another profession which offers grants is the education field. A TEACH Grant is available to those single moms who will be entering the teaching field upon graduation. There are some stipulations with this grant so you need to be sure you understand what is expected of you and that you are willing to meet those terms.

The institution of your choice may also have grants that are designed for single moms or those who meet their financial or academic qualifications. These grants may well be in addition to the funds that you receive from the Federal Government.

As a single mom, you will also be glad to know that grants never have to be repaid. This means that you have the potential to leave college with your degree and no debt. When you start your new career, you will only have the future that you will be able to provide you’re your family. Grants make sense for single moms. It is time for you to get yours today.
